What is the difference between the two terms?
Probiotics are live non-pathogenic microorganisms and bacteria that naturally reside in the gut of a healthy individual. When we talk about probiotics, we refer to beneficial «inhabitants» that take care of the place where they live.
Prebiotics are the food for these microorganisms. Mostly fiber.
Probiotics are live microorganisms. Prebiotics are the chemical substances on which probiotics feed. The difference between them is roughly like the difference between you and a carrot.
Against the background of taking probiotics, sufficient fiber intake may seem unimportant and insignificant. Many people with gut microbiome issues are unaware that they also need to nourish it to keep it healthy and strong. It's essential to provide it with enough fiber.
Prebiotics are very important. It's the food on which bacteria feed. In consuming prebiotics, as with everything else, there should be moderation.
An excess of prebiotics stimulates the rapid growth and development of the gut microbiome. Combined with an excess of decay products, it can even lead to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), whose main symptoms are bloating and gas formation.
A lack of prebiotics in the diet (food for intestinal bacteria), on the contrary, suppresses the gut microbiome and contributes to a decrease in its population. This can lead to problems in food digestion, deterioration of the GI tract's function, vitamin deficiency, and weakened immunity. 
With chronic prebiotic deficiency, there may be a dysbiosis or a shift in the microbiome balance towards pathogenic putrefactive bacteria and fungi. Gut irritation triggers various food allergies, toxicities, self-poisoning, dermatitis, eczema, etc.
Therefore, the diet should be balanced, and in addition to the main dishes, it should contain a sufficient amount of fresh vegetables, greens, fruits, and products containing fiber.
